Till we meet again…

parting is such sweet sorrow…

Our last Sunday in the UK for a long time. Our last Sunday doing church with our brothers and sisters in the UK… bitter-sweet, of course. ‘Bitter’ because we won’t enjoy their company for a long time. ‘Sweet’ because goodbyes present an opportunity to express things that don’t get said in the normal everyday life:

“We’ll be thinking of you.”

“We’ll pray for you everyday.”

“You’ll be missed.”

“Know that God goes with you.”

What a comfort knowing that God goes with us, and that He remains here watching over dear friends and family. We didn’t sing it (because it was too much of a ‘tear-jerker’!) but this hymn seems very fitting right now:

God be with you till we meet again,

by His counsels guide, uphold you,

with His sheep securely fold you:

God be with you till we meet again.

Till we meet, till we meet, till we meet at Jesus’ feet,

till we meet, till we meet, God be with you till we meet again.

God be with you till we meet again,

‘neath His wings protecting hide you,

daily manna still provide you:

God be with you till we meet again.

Till we meet, till we meet, till we meet at Jesus’ feet,

till we meet, till we meet, God be with you till we meet again.

God be with you till we meet again,

when life’s perils thick confound you,

put His arms unfailing round you:

God be with you till we meet again.

Till we meet, till we meet, till we meet at Jesus’ feet,

till we meet, till we meet, God be with you till we meet again.

God be with you till we meet again,

keep love’s banner floating o’er you,

smite death’s threatening wave before you:

God be with you till we meet again.

Till we meet, till we meet, till we meet at Jesus’ feet,

till we meet, till we meet, God be with you till we meet again.

We don’t know when we’ll meet again. We don’t know what the future holds. Some may visit us in Japan. Some we won’t see until we come back in 4 years. Some of our brothers and sisters may well have been taken home by the time we return… for some that is quite likely. Or, like with many missionaries of the past, we might not survive the journey! …or maybe we will meet in the air with the sound of the trumpet and second coming of our Lord Jesus. We don’t know.

But what we do know is that until we do meet again, God will be with us and with those we leave behind.
